[Chamaemelum Nobile]

Ancient origin: Camomile has been in use in the Mediterranean region for thousands of years, used extensively by the Egyptians, Moors and Saxons. The Egyptians considered it a sacred flower and dedicated it to the Sun god and used it in ritual ceremonies to stop fits and fevers. The Saxons made it one of their "nine sacred herbs" which they called Maythen and used it to heal other plants.

A native of southern and western Europe, it is a small herb with a hairy branched stem. It has feathery pinnate leaves and produces daisy-like white flowers larger than those found in German Camomile (from which herbal tea is made). The essential oil comes from the flower heads by a process of steam distillation. A very useful and versatile oil. Do not however confuse it with Camomile Maroc which does not have anything like the same properties. It is noted for its anti-inflammatory and sedative properties.

Sources: It is native to southern and western Europe, naturalized in North America. It is cultivated in Britain, Belgium, Hungary, the USA, Italy and France.

Skin Care: It is a valuable oil for many skin problems, especially where the skin is very sensitive, red or dry. Its most important application is in the treatment of allergies, such as eczema, urticaria, dry flaky and itchy conditions. Having a bath with drops of Camomile in can soothe skin conditions and also help to calm a person if they are suffering from stress which can cause some problem skin conditions.

It is good for use in hot compresses on boils, abscesses, infected cuts. It is good for temporary relief on tooth abscesses until a person can go to the dentist. Teething infants can be soothed by rubbing a little Camomile diluted to 1% into the cheeks. The action of Camomile can help to cause small blood-vessels to shrink and therefore reduce the redness of cheeks due to enlarged capillaries. It may be months before a benefit is seen for this.

Circulation, Muscles and Joints: It is good to use for muscular pain and inflamed joints. It is very effective for sprains, inflamed tendons and swollen painful joints. A cold compress is best for treating this.

Digestive system: Camomile tea, and a massage of the area can be used for internal inflammatory conditions such as colitis, gastritis and diarrhoea. Again as tension is often linked with these conditions Camomile can help to calm and stabilise the emotions.

Genito-urinary system: Menstrual pain and menopausal problems can, in many instances be relieved by a combination of compresses, massage, baths and teas. It will help with fluid retention while its gently antidepressant action will help with the feelings of stress.

Nervous system: As with many essential oils the mental and emotional effects parallel its physical effects and Camomile is soothing, calming and antidepressant. It helps especially where a person is fretful, irritable or nervous. Camomile can be used as an alternative or blended with Lavender in baths to relieve insomnia.

Mixing Oils: It blends well with Lavender, Frankincense, Sandalwood, Rosemary, Marjoram, spices and florals.
