It has been used in Chinese medicine for over 4000 years to treat malaria, cholera, diarrhoea and other digestive problems. Like many spices it was highly prized and Attila the Hun is reputed to have demanded 3,000 lbs of pepper as part of the ransom for the city of Rome. In Greece it is still used to fortify the stomach. The mendicant monks of India found a few grains of pepper a day gives them remarkable endurance enabling them to walk great distances.
The plant is a perennial woody climbing vine with heart-shaped leaves and small white flowers. The berries turn from red to black as they mature, the peppercorns are basically the dried unripened berries. The oil is produced by steam distillation from the crushed peppercorns.
Native to south west India, it is cultivated extensively in tropical climates. Major producers are India, Indonesia, Malaysia, China and Madagascar. It is also distilled in Europe and the USA.
Skin Care: Black Pepper is good for chilblains.
Circulation, Muscles and Joints: One of the main uses of Black Pepper is in massage blends for muscular pain, stiffness and fatigue but it is important to keep the proportion of Black Pepper low as it is possible to produce irritation by overdoing it. It has stimulant and tonic properties and therefore it can prevent stiffness and pain in athletes and dancers. It is good when combined with Lavender, Marjoram and Rosemary for treating muscles. It can be valuable in anaemia as it is a stimulant of the spleen which is involved in the production of new blood cells. This action is also good following heavy bleeding or severe bruising.
Respiratory system: As it has warming qualities it is good for catarrh and chills.
Digestive system: It is excellent for treating disorders of the digestive tract as it is an
antispasmodic, tonic and stimulant. It can be used to help a sluggish digestive system and will soothe the smooth muscle of the gut. It also helps to stimulate the kidneys.
Mixing Oils: It blends well with Lavender, Frankincense, Sandalwood, Rosemary, Marjoram, spices and florals.
WARNING: Use sparingly, can cause skin irritation with over use.
